Atlanta Restaurant Reviews: ITP, OTP Nigerian, Afghani, Korean, Mediterranean, Japanese Restaurants and More

I really cover the map on Episode 11 of the famed Atlanta Grubber podcast, for all your Atlanta foodie needs. We eat Nigerian at Fly Chef Atlanta. ITP, I hit El Burro Pollo at the Collective near GA Tech. Great Korean food at BB Myun in Duluth, Sushi Mito in Peachtree Corners, Public Woodstock a place that makes their sandwich meats in house. Best Barbecue is both on Buford Highway and Duluth. I had some duck at the one OTP. The Dutch from Dutch Monkey Donuts puts out some great fries. I eat on Buford Highway at La Mei Zi, Afghani at Olomi’s in Johns Creek, and long-time fave Samad Mediterranean Grill.

Atlanta Restaurant Review Podcast: From the Earth, Chattahoochee Food Works, Madras Chettinaad, Much More

Finally, episode 9 of the never-won-an-award podcast the Atlanta Grubber. I get all over town. In my backyard, I talk about From the Earth, which is a great restaurant, brewery, hangout, and now concert venue! Once a Decatur restaurant, now in Alpharetta, Madras Chettinaad is flat out one of the premier dining destinations in the area.

I give you an early scouting report on Chattahoochee Food Works, from Andrew Zimmerman, which appears to be well on its way to being the top food hall in the metro area. TydeTate Kitchen was where my maiden voyage was. But I have tried some previous locations of forthcoming purveyors and I tell you which ones I’m looking forward to. 

We finally have a good restaurant at Mansell Road and North Point Parkway. The drought ends with Passador Steak House. Two stud chefs Richard Ullio and Mike Di Paolo opened one of the best restaurants in Dunwoody, Novo Cucina.

Near Halcyon in Forsyth Country are two good places, Heidi’s Heavenly Cookies featured on national TV shows and publications, plus Jay’s Mexican Grill, which boasts they are, “Definitely not Tex-Mex.”

Restaurant Review Podcast: Alpharetta’s Savory Gourmet, Masterpiece Chinese Moves to Johns Creek

Episode 8 of Atlanta Grubber focuses on some fantastic restaurants again. Masterpiece Chinese has moved to a bigger and fancier location, extending the too-often-overlooked Asian Alley of Johns Creek. I had a lot of dishes and talk about many of them. 

A real New York deli in Alpharetta? No way. Wait until we tell you about Savory Gourmet in downtown Alpharetta. Forget about your Boar’s Head sandwiches. Turn it up several notches at Savory Gourmet. Great grab and go stuff is available as well. We probably should have talked about Seven Sisters Scones Café. There is so much great premade foods at their shop in Suwanee. 

The pain of losing O4W Pizza should be eased by being replaced by Glide Pizza on the Atlanta Beltline. I also visited Stone’s Cuisine and Cocktails and liked some dishes I specify. Two nice dessert options are Pop BarAlpharetta and Mr. Tino’s in Roswell, the latter has a lot more than ice cream.

Atlanta Dining Podcasts: Top Women Chefs

It’s Women’s History Month thus your infallible restaurant whisperer is going to feature some of the best female chefs and restaurant owners in metro. We start out with the personable Soroya Khoury from Hen Mother Cookhouse. The Napa Valley trained chef has built up an enormous following. Likewise, Jasmine Willis Slewitzke of Gracious Plenty gained years of experience with Ford Fry’s restaurants before turning Canton Street head over heels in love. 

Nooshin Yazdani of Noosh Kitchen earned a loyal following before expanding the restaurant and menu, transitioning to a more formal atmosphere. Nahm Thongyoung, chef/owner at Nahm Fine Thai Cuisine was a soothsayer, among the first to open top-shelf cuisine in what once was a chain of fools. Sripapa Oyanturak of M Thai Street Food has a fancier menu and creature comforts than “street food” might imply. 

Cakes by Darcy has a very loyal following purely by word of mouth. Who does better cupcakes? Not sure anyone. Two other young ladies also put out tasty and beautiful cakes, but also excel on the savory side. Safoora Kamali of Swan Café and Liud De Jesus Lopez, Liud’s Cuban Bakery & Café are two small, but outstanding sweet and savory places. Belen de la Cruz of Empanadas & Pastries is getting noticed by big media. Not sure if her small eatery qualifies as “hidden” anymore, but it’s still a gem.  

Briana Carson has two locations of Crave Pie in both Parson’s Alley and Alpharetta City Center. Arpena Satyu-Burge of Dutch Monkey Donuts brought great food to an area that is developing into the next great restaurant town. Michelle Liu and Karen Wang of Mama’s Kitchen gets some more love from us. 

Some key sous chefs at elite restaurants deserving of a mention are Jess Libatore, Sous Chef at Table and Main and Laura Orellana, Executive Sous Chef at Osteria Mattone

Restaurant Review Podcast For Atlanta: Buon Fornello, Canton Cooks, Socks Love Barbecue, New Realm Brewery

It’s Episode 6 of the Atlanta Grubber. Years ago, some of the best barbecue was in Cumming at Pappy Red’s. Atlanta barbecue has advanced light years since then. But Cumming has one of the top choices in the south, Sock’s Love Barbecue.

Sock’s has gotten deserved press, so no longer a “hidden gem” just a gem. Sandy Springs/Dunwoody almost in Brookhaven has Buon Fornello, featuring homemade pasta. Pick your own pasta, protein (or in my case proteins), sauce. Love Bolognese sauce? If you haven’t been here, you must drop what you are doing and go now.

Downtown Norcross has some of the best Cuban food and without question one of their best Cuban sandwich at Mojito’s Cuban-American Bistro. Atlanta has a lot of good Chinese restaurants, from Cantonese to Sichuan, and nearby Taiwanese. For American-Chinese staples, Canton Cooks is among the best. New Realm Brewery, situated on the Atlanta Beltline has everything: good beer, food, and A-Plus as a hangout, especially on a beautiful day.

Best Black-Owned Restaurants In Atlanta Featured on Restaurant Podcast

Episode No. 5 is up. February is Black History Month, so I focus on some of the best black owned, both inside and outside the perimeter. The best cheesesteak I’ve had in this state in 32 years in Atlanta is at Big Dave’s Cheesesteaks, a place that has exploded in just a few years from a tiny joint next to a gas station, into a powerhouse.

A Cajun restaurant that should get a lot more love is Favors and Flavors. That love begins now. Why would anyone eat at Duncan Krispy or whatever those prefab chain donut purveyors are called when you can get nationally recognized made-from-scratch ones at Sublime Donuts? Food trucks have exploded in popularity in recent years, but one of the best and first ones is Blaxican.

I love the combination of high-quality and unique to the area restaurants. Two more upscale African restaurants have emerged near my home chomping grounds in recent years. For food of Ghana and Nigeria, check out Cafe Songhai. Another date-worthy option serving food from said continent is Ethiopiques Café and Restaurant.

Atlanta Restaurant Podcast black owned restaurants

Big Oak Tavern just celebrated their one-year anniversary and was happy to hear via Atlanta Eats they are doing a soul food menu on Sunday and Mondays. As we speak of Roswell and soul food, on the east part of that great city is another newbie, Southern Classic Foods. When I lived in Duluth, right along the borders of Larryville and Lilburn, one of my favorites was a soul food establishment. Fast forward 18 years later and Who’s Got Soul is still putting out great food.

Though the focus of this episode was black-owned, I visited a few outside said category. I will have to get back to the Atlanta Beltline and check out Glide Pizza. When I first moved to AlphaRoz, one of the few non-chains was Athens Restaurant and they still put out one of the great gyros within miles.

Atlanta Dining Podcast: Cubano’s, Frankfurt Döner & Meats, In-Depth Gio’s Chicken, Mama’s Kitchen, Arditi Pizza

AtlantaGrubber restaurant review podcast presents episode 4. Yes, we did mention Gio’s Chicken Amalfitano in a previous episode, but we give it a more in-depth review here. Reports say that Cubano’s is the best Cuban sandwich this city has ever seen. Your infallible restaurant whisperer says for sure if it is.

While discussing Cuban sandwiches, we give deserved shoutouts to Mojito’s Cuban-American Bistro, Tortugas Cuban Grill, D’Cuban Café, and Buena Gente Cuban Bakery.

“Hidden gems” is a phrase thrown around a lot, but what does it mean? Joe Duffy may not be able to define it, but he knows them when he tastes them and he may unveil the two best in Greater Atlanta in Frankfurt Doner and Meats in Ball Ground and Johns Creek’s Mama’s Kitchen. A jaw-dropping sandwich, remarkable and uncommon in these parts can be had at Emidio’s Restaurant. We also head to Snellville to check out Arditi Pizza.

Atlanta Restaurant Reviews: O4W Pizza, Yeah! Burger, Catfish Hox, Keenan’s Pit Bar-B-Que, Grana, And More

We are excited about Episode 3 of the AtlantaGrubber podcast. Please subscribe to us wherever you get your podcasts as we are everywhere now. The featured restaurant is O4W Pizza, which has gotten national recognition and has been listed on “Best Pizza in America” lists many times. It’s located in the exploding synergistic Parson’s Alley in Duluth, GA.

Our uber popular Sound Bites–quick hitters talks about Yeah! Burger in Midtown, another of our favorite eateries near GA Tech. We also compare it favorably to Moxie Burger, perhaps the OTP counterpart. Joe Duffy also noshes at veteran-owned Catfish Hox, a really good casual joint in May-Retta.

Great news for barbecue hounds as Brian Keenan of Meating Street Barbecue fame is back with Keenan’s Pit Bar-B-Cue with catering, pop-ups, and home deliveries of some of the best, if not the best barbecue in the state.

After dining with the great Mara Davis at Little Rey, she recommended I bring back the family some Grana from the part of Midtown I worked at for my first several years as a southerner. Onward to Kennesaw and The Rotisserie Shop, a place who does the namesake dish as well as anyone.

Turns out Ball Ground is a great place to visit. Some good eats are at the Ball Ground Burger Bus. We plan to return to Ball Ground and explain why. Kool Runnings Jamaican Restaurant, a black-owned restaurant in Peachtree Corners is another place that deserves more publicity.
